US Secretary of Defense James Mattis asked senators to make exceptions to the sanction law approved in 2017. This is reported by the NV with a reference to Defenseone.

Mattis said that the law adopted to hold the Kremlin accountable for its international policies could prevent the Pentagon from countering Moscow's influence.

"Russia can actually bet us a mate" - warns Senators Mattis.

The Law on Countering America's Rivals through Sanctions (CAATSA) reduces the possibility of US alliance with countries that historically depend on arms exports from Russia.

The minister advocated the introduction of exemptions in the law on grounds of national security for countries that are trying to reduce dependence on Moscow.

"There are countries that are trying to stop buying Russian weapons and systems. We need only look at India, Vietnam and some other countries to understand that over time we will do harm to ourselves, "- said Mattis to the Committee on Armed Forces of the Senate.

Recall, from January 29, the US was warned about the beginning of the application of "secondary" anti-Russian sanctions.

Restrictive measures were introduced against any persons carrying out "significant" business with Russian defense and intelligence organizations, whose list was published in October.

The list includes Kalashnikov, Izhmash, Tupolev, Almaz-Antey, Rosoboronexport, Rostekh, Sukhoi, Admiralty Shipyards, Izhevsk Mechanical Plant, Oboronprom, Uralvagonzvod Helicopters of Russia and other companies. Also on the list are Russian structures such as the FSB, SVR and GRU.
