A group of 140 Democratic congressmen in the US wrote a letter to President Donald Tramp calling for sanctions against Russia to be enforced by law passed by Congress in the summer of 2017. Otherwise, parliamentarians are threatening to adopt a new, more stringent sanction law against Russia, Rain reports with reference to The Hill.
"Your actions over the past year show that you constantly forgive President Vladimir Putin and deny his already clearly proven support for your campaign in 2016. With your latest actions, you ignore the law ... and let Russia understand that you will not do anything to stop a new interference in our elections, "the message says..
"We gave you the tools to solve this problem. If you continue to keep these tools on the shelf, we will insist on additional legislative measures with more stringent requirements. If you refuse to protect the US from a hostile foreign government, the Congress must act independently, "reads the letter. The amendments adopted in the summer give the president the opportunity to impose sanctions against Russia, but do not oblige the administration to do this.
Democrats are unhappy with Trump's unwillingness to impose new sanctions against Moscow. Earlier, the Trump administration stated that there was no need for these measures, since the threat of introducing new restrictions serves as a rather strong deterrent for Russia. In February, US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin announced the development of new sanctions against Russia, noting that they will be introduced in the next 30 days. On March 7, Mnuchin said that additional restrictions on Moscow would be introduced within a week.
