According to official data, 71-year-old conservative Anastasiades received 55.99% of the vote. As reported by DW, his opponent, 50-year-old former health minister Stavros Malas received support of 44% of voters.

According to the state television of Cyprus, Malas has already acknowledged his defeat and congratulated Anastasiades on his telephone conversation on winning the election.

Both candidates favored negotiations on the reunification of the divided Mediterranean island. At the same time, voting took place only in its Greek part - the Republic of Cyprus.

Recall, the third largest island of the Mediterranean Sea was divided into two parts in 1974 as a result of the coup supported by the then Greek junta and further intervention by the Turkish army. In 2004, the Republic of Cyprus became a member of the European Union.

As reported URA-Inform, in Cyprus, where on Sunday, January 28, presidential elections were held, the current head of the republic Nikos Anastasiadis leads the voting.

However, he failed to score 50% for a complete victory. Thus, the final winner will be determined already in the second round, which took place on February 4.
