Grinbergs said that he considers today's verdict a sign of corruption of the state, as well as the fact that "real terrorists are a state". Attorney Raitis intends to appeal the verdict in the Supreme Court in cassation order.
Grinbergs said in his last speech that he no longer believes in Islam and turned to Christianity. He also said that he returned to Latvia voluntarily, asking for deportation from Turkey, and also cooperated in Finland in the fight against international terrorism. In the court of first instance, the prosecutor demanded for 11 years imprisonment for Grinbergs.
The criminal law for participation in crimes of a criminal organization against humanity, peace or war crimes provides for life imprisonment or imprisonment for a term of 10 to 20 years.
Last summer, the Security Police received information that a Latvian citizen Grinbergs was detained in Turkey, and in September the Turkish authorities decided to deport him.
