Vitaly Portnikov: What for the Russian achievement, for the Ukrainian - a symbol of degradation

Russian does not think about himself, but about the strength of the state, which is capable of conquering and humiliating other nations. For the Ukrainian, the state is only an opportunity to ensure his own freedom and welfare. In Soviet times, the anniversary of the October Revolution in Petrograd in all union republics was celebrated in the same way, formally - as a great holiday, which continued with the "triumphal procession of Soviet power".

The fact that the history of the peoples that made up the Russian Empire went different ways, not even from October, but from February 1917, that the Bolsheviks united the empire with not even ideology, but blood, that this very inhuman ideology as a result of the development the new state turned into a cover for traditional Great Russian chauvinism, naturally, remained outside the framework of these celebrations.

And we continued to live in a falsified, fictitious history - and in a falsified, fictitious reality.

Meanwhile, it was the October Revolution of 1917 that was an event that emphasized the difference between the fate of Russians and Ukrainians, the difference between their past and future.

Until October, Ukrainian politicians who thought about the prospects of their people still had a hope of finding a compromise and mutual understanding with Russian democracy, a certain special status of Ukraine in a new democratic state.

After the coup, all these hopes disappeared - it became clear that there was a clash with evil, which does not want any compromise, which is covered by beautiful slogans about bread and peace - but it brings with it famine and war. It is no coincidence that the proclamation of state independence by Ukraine of the People's Republic was a reaction to October, and not to February 1917.

The reaction is not to the revolution, but to the gangster revolution - because what happened in October in Petrograd, there was no revolution or even an uprising, and the Bolsheviks themselves for a long time recognized this indisputable fact.

About why this division of destinies happened, one can argue for a long time, but most importantly, in my opinion, this is contempt for the empire and associated slavery. What is still the main historical achievement for the Russian people, for the Ukrainian is a symbol of oppression and degradation.

The Russian thinks not about himself, but about the strength of the state, which is capable of conquering and humiliating other nations - and this force compensates for his own humiliation and helplessness.

For the Ukrainian, the state is only an opportunity to ensure his own freedom and well-being. These are two worlds. The world of those who left Egypt for Moses and the world of those who stayed to live their life in chains and shackles - but in pride for the pharaohs, pyramids and guaranteed soup.

Between these worlds there is and can not be anything in common and close. Intimacy arose only when the slave army defeated free men.

And the proximity can appear only when the neighbors refuse to deify slavery when they realize that the person is a person, not a cog in the state machine, when they learn to respect not Lenin, Stalin or Putin, but themselves.

Only then will Russians have an opportunity to understand what in fact was that ugly monster that arose on the ruins of the Russian Empire in October 1917.

Only then will our neighbors be sure that the Ukrainian February of 1918, August 1991 and February 2014 were not a coincidence, not a conspiracy against the empire, not a "Russophobia," but a natural human desire for freedom, for which Russians only have to learn.
