The boundaries of the stranger

Hungary and Romania promised to fight together against the Ukrainian law on education. The one that secures the state language in high school, - writes Pavel Kazarin in the column on "Crimea. Realities ".

It's funny that earlier Russia opposed this law, calling it "an act of ethnocide". It's funny because the Moscow protest in Ukraine, in fact, did not notice. The war disaccustomed Kiev to look at the words from Russia - and this is the most striking result of the whole campaign that the Kremlin began in 2014. But angry calls from the western border for many in Ukraine sounded unexpectedly. And completely in vain.

Because this is another illustration of how real independence is achieved.

The annexation of the Crimea and the invasion of the Donbass led Ukraine to acquire subjectivity. A country that protects itself begins to conduct an external contour. The one that becomes the common denominator for the most diverse numerals. Ukraine has not only a new symbolism and not only a new pantheon of heroes. She had an understanding of her own interests - and the need to protect these interests.

Actually, the annexation of the Crimea and the occupation of Donbass have just become Moscow's response to Ukraine's choice of its civilizational path. The Kremlin is used to believe that its interests do not end where Russia's borders end. But other countries of the region were not ready for this either.

Because all of Kiev's neighbors are used to the fact that their borders are conditional and amorphous. And now they are sincerely indignant when it turns out that the Ukrainian contour concerns not only the Russian-Ukrainian section of the border. It is simply unusual for them to realize that their personal space ends where the space of another begins. And the line of delimitation is the state border.

Claims to Ukraine could not help but arise. They would not have appeared only if the country continued to exist in the former "hybrid" format. Kiev himself accustomed Bucharest, Budapest and Warsaw to their own lack of subjectivity and spinelessness. And now the country is just passing the very same path that was supposed to start in 1991.

Such a fate awaits any new state that begins with the state elbows to denote its sphere of interest. And when the same Belarus will gain real, not imitation independence - the same path will have to go through and. And we can only guess with which neighbors - in addition to Russia - it will have to go through a series of mutual "misunderstandings". And a separate question is whether Ukraine will be on this list.

Perhaps it would be easier for Kiev if the country did not hesitate all these twenty-three years. If the acquisition of subjectivity occurred when the power in the countries of Eastern Europe were pro-European politicians. And not those that sell a picture of yesterday and a variety of phantom pains.

However, it's better late than never.
