The introduction of UN peacekeeping forces to the east of Ukraine can become a means of protection for Ukrainian citizens and a possible way to restore the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, said the head of the press service of the US State Department Heather Nauert.
Peacekeepers should have a broad mandate to ensure security throughout the occupied territory of Ukraine, and they should be placed on the border with Russia, added Nauert.
Earlier, Russia and Ukraine developed various draft UN resolutions on the deployment of a peacekeeping mission in Donbass. Moscow suggested sending the "blue helmets" to the region for at least six months exclusively to ensure the safety of OSCE observers in the conflict zone.
The Ukrainian draft states that Russia can not participate in the peacekeeping mission, and the "blue helmets" should be deployed throughout the conflict zone, including the Ukrainian-Russian border.
