The Ministry of Defense of Russia for the first time declassified the losses of the USSR in the years of the Caribbean crisis. According to the press service of the ministerial department of information and mass communications, "from August 1, 1962 to August 16, 1964, 64 Soviet citizens were killed in Cuba". The reasons for their death are not disclosed. Earlier information on the number of losses in Cuba was not officially published.
As explained in the defense department of the Russian Federation, in the years of diplomatic and military confrontation between the USSR and the USA, it was planned to deploy 40 medium-range ballistic missiles on the island: 24 with a range of more than 2,000 km and 16 with a radius of more than 4,000 km.
The term "the Caribbean crisis" refers to the sharp confrontation between the USSR and the US, which began in 1961 after the deployment of missiles in Turkey and Italy by Washington, as well as threats connected with the possibility of an American military invasion of Cuba.
