Kazakhstan is in favor of reforming the UN Security Council, Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov said, Kazakhstanskaya Pravda reports..

According to him, Astana offers to "quantitatively and qualitatively" expand the composition of the Security Council, improve its working methods and strengthen the relationship between the General Assembly and the Security Council.

"This would increase the transparency of the work of the Security Council, increase the effectiveness of its decisions based on taking into account the interests and aspirations of the regions concerned," Abdrakhmanov said..

According to him, Kazakhstan shares the opinion of the majority of UN member states that "in its present form the Security Council no longer reflects the realities of our world".

"Despite the difficulty of reconciling the different positions, there is a general understanding that, no matter what was the Security Council's new configuration, it should work actively and efficiently performing the tasks assigned to it by the UN Charter and bearing the primary responsibility for international peace and security" , - stressed Abdrakhmanov.

He added that the reform should be carried out on the basis of consensus and meet the requirements of all member countries of the organization.

Now Kazakhstan is a member of the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member. The Security Council consists of five permanent members (Russia, the United States, the PRC, the United Kingdom and France) with "veto power", as well as ten non-permanent members.

A number of countries are trying to reform the Security Council, arguing that in its present form it does not fully reflect the current alignment of forces in the world,.
