Granting a Membership Action Plan (MAP) to NATO in Ukraine would be a step towards further Alliance advancement to Russian borders, which will not contribute to the strengthening of European security, said Dmitry Peskov, the presidential press secretary.

"For many years Russia has been seriously concerned about the approach of NATO's military infrastructure to our borders. Potentially this (granting the MAP to Ukraine - IF) can be a further step in this direction, which, of course, will not contribute to the strengthening of stability and security on the European continent, "he told reporters..

Peskov noted that, despite the fact that the issue of relations between Ukraine and NATO does not directly concern Russia, this issue has a significant indirect impact on Russia.
