Kaspersky Lab experts analyzed a new global attack of the extortion virus and concluded that it is not associated with the Petya virus, as previously thought.
According to analysts, the new virus is fundamentally different from Petya, which was described as early as the spring of 2016. But for the spread of the virus used the same vulnerability in Windows systems, which in May 2017 helped send WannaCry.
At the same time, Symantec believes that the new virus is similar to Petya.
The experts found that nine victims of the virus had already paid a ransom ($ 300) for decrypting their data.
The main goals of the new virus, which Kaspersky called NotPetya, were Ukraine and Russia. But the virus is also recorded in Poland, Italy, Britain, Germany, France and the US.
Recall, today, June 27, Ukrainian companies and businesses were attacked by a virus. Windows-based computers became victims of a virus-extortionist who encrypted data and demanded a ransom for their return.
