The planned test is the first time that US military will attempt to intercept ICBMs, previously they only conducted tests to intercept slower medium-range missiles. The test is intended to test the effectiveness of the ground-based missile defense system (Ground-based Midcourse Defense, GMD).

It is reported that experts will launch an interceptor rocket from an underground bunker from the Vandenberg Air Force Base, California.

If everything goes according to plan, the interceptor will destroy the target over the Pacific Ocean.
