Portnicki: Moscow's "Ribbentrop" was tightly imprinted in an American sandwich

The fact that the President of the United States practically simultaneously met with the heads of the foreign policy departments of Ukraine and Russia is, without a doubt, a sign. Another signal to the Kremlin is the meeting of Donald Trump with the Prime Minister of Georgia. The new administration, perhaps, is not going to deal with the post-Soviet space as tightly as its predecessors. However, giving Putin the opportunity to behave in neighboring countries, like an elephant in a china shop, Trump does not intend to either, writes journalist Vitaly Portnikov on the portal Glavred.

US officials constantly remind the Kremlin that the normalization of relations between the two countries depends on the stabilization of the situation in Ukraine and Syria. It would seem, which is easier - if Moscow really is interested in such stabilization? One can simply at least begin to implement the Minsk agreements, withdraw troops from the Donbass and after that insist on the so-called "special status" of the occupied (or, rather, already unoccupied) territories. It is possible to begin the negotiation process on the transitional period in Syria - and at least partially retain the adherents of Bashar Assad.

Why does Moscow not do this? But because its strength in destabilization, not stabilization. If Ukraine does not have Russian troops, and in Syria - Assad, Putin will be interesting only to his own associates. And then not for very long. Therefore, his choice between stabilizing relations with the United States and destabilizing the world is obvious. He - for the constant destabilization.

At the same time, Moscow does not want to notice that Russia has ceased to be the only player in the post-Soviet space, a country with which they talk about the future of others. The Moscow "Ribbentrop" sent by Putin to Washington was rigidly imprinted in an American sandwich between Trump's meetings with the Prime Minister of Georgia and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. And it turned out that in the White House, Lavrov is not so much listened as explains to him the conditions for stabilizing relations.

And these conditions for Moscow a priori unacceptable.
