The decision to withdraw from Europol was adopted long ago - following the results of the referendum, which was held in December 2015. To a certain extent, it was the victory of Eurosceptics. Then the inhabitants of the country refused to join the common policy of the European Union in the field of law. As a result, Denmark's full participation in the work of the EU police agency has become meaningless. However, communications will continue.
The declaration on this account was signed last week by the chairman of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, the head of the European Council Donald Tusk and the Danish Prime Minister Lars Locke Rasmussen. According to the document, Copenhagen will no longer have full access to Europol files, but the Danish operatives will continue to cooperate with European counterparts, in particular, to exchange information. Europol fights, first of all, with terrorism, smuggling weapons and drugs.
