Under the roof of this "House" socio-cultural and political projects will develop. On some of these projects, for the purposes of the organization's existence and attitude towards the Baltic countries, Postimees asked the director of the NGO Grigory Frolov.
- What is the purpose of your organization and why exactly Kiev?.
- There are several points and the main important tasks. Since the swamp business and events in the Crimea, let's say, serious attacks began inside Russia on civil society, and a lot of people left the country. They are educated people with a strong political position. We now have a global wave of Russian migration, which is represented in Europe, the US and here in Ukraine (here and further the author's spelling -. Red. One of the tasks is to help immigrants and refugees here in Ukraine. On the one hand, these are people who came to Ukraine for ideological reasons, to be part of a big change after the revolutionary events of the Maidan, on the other hand, these are refugees who now fled from real criminal cases.
For this purpose we have the EmigRussia project, within which we provide consular, legal and even psychological support. We are trying to provide some necessary services for those people who can not officially go to the Russian embassy in Kiev. On the other hand, the Russian diaspora has many opportunities to fight Russian influence in the west, Ukraine is the country with which it all began, therefore we believe that the presence of such a center in Kiev can become a deterrent to Russian influence. In this center, there will be a lot of analytical work, information events, we will talk about the whole range of relations related to the Kremlin's influence on Ukraine and on Western democracies, and the conflict in the Donbass and Crimea. We are here to build an information bridge between Russia and Ukraine in order to eliminate this information wall built by Russian propaganda.
- What is this wall?.
- Now any average person in Russia or an activist of civil society does not understand anything of what is happening in Ukraine. A lot of people think that everything is over, the revolution has failed, no reforms, corruption and all. I, living in Kiev, I understand that this is not true. Yes, not everything is perfect, but there are significant progress, many structures are reforming, there is a huge number of passionately young people who are fighting for the future of their country in different structures. People in Russia do not know about this at all. In Ukraine, the same thing, no one really knows anything about the situation in Russia, where there are political prisoners, where you can sit down for a repost on the Internet. Everybody knows about Oleg Sentsov or Ildar Dadin, and about 40 people are behind the rep, few people know.
- Did the Ukrainian radical organizations come out on you?.
- Not yet. Physical activity so far no one has shown, but the "facebook army" has already been activated. We understand that there is a part of Ukrainian society that we really are not happy about. We understand why this happens: in Ukraine there is an obvious allergy to the word "Russia" in principle, but we will here prove our reputation.
- Who is behind you, who is financing the organization?.
- This is a project of the Free Russian Foundation. This is an organization created in Washington by Russian political emigrants two years ago. Now we have a fairly large representation in the world. In addition to the American capital, there are also our organizations in Warsaw, in Bonn, and here we present one of them. We do not need any big figures behind us. Khodorkovsky has nothing to do with this, his activists did it.
- In the Baltic States, such projects are planned?.
"Specifically, our organization does not plan anything there, but in Lithuania there is a very large group of Russian emigrants who are quite active and conduct many activities. A lot of refugees moved to Vilnius after the "swamp business".
In Estonia, there is a project "Activator" Eugenia Chirikova, which tells about activists in the Russian regions, and she too is engaged in the destruction of the information blockade. Talking about the fact that in Russia there are thousands of points where there are protests against the current authorities. In two words, the Baltic countries are one of the centers of Russian political emigration. Because it is easier and friendly with the Russian language.
- In Ukraine there are kidnappings and even murders of opposition Russian politicians. Do you do something to protect yourself from this?.
- Unfortunately, in Ukraine, for certain agents of Russian spies and, probably, it was such a thing that was here before the Maidan. Investigators in the Voronenkov case (a criminal case of the murder of former State Duma deputy Denis Voronenkov, whom the killer shot in the center of Kiev on March 23, 2017 -. Author) is constantly being talked about and linked to his murder with the activities of Russian special services. We, of course, understand that in Kiev we can not feel ourselves in safety. Any politically active Russian understands that this is an unsafe country, but this is our choice, because the things we are doing are very important.
- Who are all these people who work for you?.
- This is mainly journalists and public figures of Russia and Ukraine. At us now parity 50 on 50.
- What are you planning in the near future?.
- From next week we will have the first event about repressive practices in Crimea, Kuban and Chechnya, such a comparative analysis, then there will be an event for protests in Russia. We plan that in a week we will have at least two or three events. Let's start with socio-political, then we will have cultural.
There will be a library with books in Russian, Ukrainian and English, but it will be quite a specialized literature. I think that in a month or two we will work in the open door mode, so that anyone can come here, have a cup of coffee, read a book, talk with friends for a couple of hours and stay for an event here.. Now it is very important to understand that the Kremlin's interest in Ukraine has not disappeared. The Russian troops are still in the Donbass, and that's why we should be here to stop his influence in the country.
