In Ukraine, the trend towards choosing unusual names for newborns continues. This was reported by the Ministry of Justice on Friday, July 17.

Along with the popular Sofia, Artem or Alexander, parents are increasingly choosing double combinations, foreign options, biblical and old Ukrainian names.

According to the Ministry of Justice, in the first half of 2026, the most popular names for girls remained Sofia, Zlata, Milana, Emilia, Anna, Anastasia, Polina, Maria, Solomiya and Eva.

Among the boys, Artem, Alexander, Matvey, Maxim, Timofey, Bogdan, David, Yaroslav, Roman and Dmitry were most often chosen.

At the same time, many parents sought to give their children a name that would set them apart from others.. Among the newborns there were girls with double names Adelaide-Loredana, Maryam-Nicolette, Dominica-Aniel, Margarita-Kilina and Abavedaria-Alice.

The boys were named Daniel-Arthur Teofim, Roman-Nurislam, Andrey-Andrian, Eliot-Theo and Mark-Gabriel.

Ukrainians are also increasingly turning to foreign names. Among the girls there were Aysel, Imeralina, Delly, Kaylee, Kasia, Patricia, Rose, Sanita, Uma and Esther.

The boys were named Amir, Leon, Sebastian, Dayan, Liam, Kilian, Ethan, Martin, David, Richard and Evan.

Names with religious and cultural roots do not lose popularity either.. Parents chose Abigail, Bathsheba, Shulamite, Evangelina, Sarah, Theona, Melania, Magdalene, Athena and Juno for the girls..

Boy names included Samiel, Essene, Nathanael, Solomon, Hemanuel, Elisha, Jeremiah, Adam, Seraphim and Benjamin.

A separate category is ancient Ukrainian and historical names, which have gradually returned in recent years. Thus, girls with the names Boguslava, Vladomir, Dzvinka, Kvitoslava, Lukeria, Olimpiada, Roksolana, Kvitka, Yarina and Orislava appeared on birth certificates.

Among the boys were Dobromir, Svyatogor, Svetozar, Zoreslav, Askold, Tamerlane, Aeneas, Panteleimon, Mirolyub and Yariy.

The Ministry of Justice notes:

although traditional names remain leaders, Ukrainian families are increasingly trying to combine modernity, family traditions and the desire to give the child a unique name.

Let us note that when choosing a name for their daughter, parents should consider not only its meaning, but also how it sounds in everyday life.. It is important that the name is harmoniously combined with the surname and patronymic and is easily perceived when communicating.
