Today, January 22, Ukraine celebrates Unity Day. On this occasion, residents of the temporarily occupied territories joined a symbolic congratulation event, which was organized by activists of the Zhovta Strichka movement..

As part of the initiative, Ukrainians from occupied cities took separate photographs with letters of the alphabet. Subsequently, these photographs were combined into one phrase - “Happy Unity Day”. Residents of Berdyansk, Donetsk, Simferopol, Yalta, Lugansk, Bakhchisaray, Perevalsk and Gorlovka took part in the action. Each letter was recorded separately, without public meetings.

According to activists, this format was chosen for security reasons, so as not to put participants at risk.. All the pictures were collected into a single visual message, which became a sign of support for Ukraine from the occupied territories.

The Day of Unity of Ukraine is celebrated annually on January 22 in memory of the Act of Reunification of the Ukrainian People's Republic and the Western Ukrainian People's Republic, proclaimed in 1919. At the state level, the holiday was officially introduced in 1999.

She writes about the events after the proclamation of this decision and the consequences for the Ukrainian elite in the article “Lessons of the Day of Conciliarity: How Russia Destroyed the Ukrainian Elite” by Tatiana Sheptytska, Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the National Historical and Memorial Reserve “Bykivnyansky Graves”.
