How many citizens would like to leave Ukraine if the border opens - survey

In Ukraine, 70% of citizens would not want to travel abroad for permanent residence after the border is opened to all categories of the population. At the same time, 20.3% of Ukrainians expressed a desire to move to another country. Another 9% could not decide, according to the results of a survey by the Democratic Initiatives Foundation.. Among respondents who expressed a desire to go abroad, the share of men is 25%, and women - 17%. Young people aged 18 to 29 would most often like to emigrate - 33%.

Sociologists indicate that the proportion of respondents wishing to go to another country for permanent residence decreases with increasing age. In particular, 27% of citizens aged 30 to 39 expressed a desire to go abroad, among respondents aged 40-49 years - 23%, 50-59 years - 16%, 60 years - 9%.

The main motivations for respondents who would like to emigrate are:.

lack of opportunities for development - 30.5%;

threat to life due to war and insufficient social support from the state - 28.6%;

desire to reunite with family - 26.2%;

desire to take out relatives dependent on the respondent - 22.9%;

inability to find the desired job - 20.6%;

restriction of constitutional rights and freedoms - 14.8%.

The survey was conducted from November 29 to December 14, 2024.

1518 respondents over 18 years old in 23 regions of Ukraine were interviewed using the face-to-face method.. In Zaporozhye, Donetsk, Kharkov, Kherson regions only in those territories that are controlled by the government of Ukraine and in which hostilities are not taking place. Theoretical sampling error does not exceed 2.6%.

According to a sociological study by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, 87% of Ukrainians are tolerant of refugees who left Ukraine. Only 13% would not like them to return to their homeland.
