About 87% of Ukrainians are tolerant of refugees who left Ukraine and only 13% would not want them to return to the country, according to a sociological study by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

Sociologists note that 47% of respondents are completely tolerant of refugees, another almost 40% agree that they return to Ukraine. At the same time, 90% of Ukrainians treat refugees with understanding and do not condemn them. As for social distance, it is 3 relative to refugees. 66 – where 1 “agrees to be admitted as a family member”, and 7 “would not be allowed into Ukraine”.

Slightly better attitude towards internally displaced persons – the social distance index towards them is 3. 20. Thus, 93% of the population agrees to allow IDPs into their environment, and only 7% have a xenophobic attitude towards them.

But Ukrainians who found themselves in occupied territory after February 24, 2022 are treated worse by other citizens of the country. 40.7% are ready to allow them into their circle, and another 44.6% agree that they should live in Ukraine, but 15% treat them with a warning.

Attitude towards Russian-speaking citizens of Ukraine averages 3.73 social distance points. 49% of respondents are ready to allow them into their circle, and another 34% agree that they should live in Ukraine. That is, 83% of the population are ready to allow Russian-speaking residents of Ukraine into their environment. 17% have a xenophobic attitude towards them.

As for citizens of Ukraine who are Russians by nationality, this group is treated worst of all in Ukraine. Social distance index is 4. 32. 39% are ready to allow them into their circle, and 29% agree that they should live in Ukraine. 32% have a xenophobic attitude towards them.

At the same time, sociologists note that compared to October 2023, the number of people who are ready to allow Ukrainian-ethnic Russians into their closest social circle has increased by 10%, while at the same time the number of those who have a xenophobic attitude towards them is 7% lower.

At the same time, the researchers add that the attitude towards Russian citizens of Ukraine in society is much better than towards Russian citizens of Russia, whom 80% of respondents would not want to allow into Ukraine even as guests.

In turn, 78% of ethnic Russian-speaking Russians who live in Ukraine and continue to call themselves Russians primarily consider themselves citizens of Ukraine.

The survey was conducted from September 20 to October 3, 2024 by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology using the method of telephone interviews based on a random sample of mobile phone numbers in all government-controlled regions of Ukraine among 989 respondents.

The sample did not include residents of territories that are temporarily not controlled by the Ukrainian authorities (at the same time, some of the respondents were IDPs who moved from the occupied territories), and the survey was not conducted with citizens who left abroad after February 24, 2022.

Formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.3) did not exceed 4.1% for indicators close to 50%, 3.5% for indicators close to 25%,.
