If in 2019 only 8% of Ukrainians believed that it was not worth learning Russian at all in schools, now there are 52% of such people, according to the results of an all-Ukrainian survey of the Kiev International Institute of Sociology.
At the same time, 42% of respondents support the preservation of the study of the Russian language at school to a certain extent, however, over 25 years there have been significant internal changes in the direction of reducing the time that should be devoted to studying the Russian language.
So, in 1998, 46% of Ukrainians believed that the amount of study should be the same as for the Ukrainian language.. In 2019, the rate of adherents of this opinion was 30%, and now it is only 3%.
Also, from 32% to 6%, there are fewer of those who believe that the Russian language should be studied to a lesser extent than Ukrainian, but more than other foreign languages.. Thus, out of the indicated 42%, the majority - 33% (or almost 80% of this category of citizens) - would like the Russian language to be given the same amount or less time than other foreign languages..
According to this year's survey, in all regions of Ukraine, the number of those who believe that the Russian language is not worth learning at all has increased.. For example, in western Ukraine there were only 22% of such people in 2019, and now it is 64%. At the same time, if in the south only 1% thought in 2019 that the Russian language was not worth learning, and now almost half of the population, or 49% of respondents. In the east, none of the respondents of the 2019 survey supported the exclusion of the Russian language from teaching in schools, and now there are 30% of them.
At the same time, the regional one is still preserved - the farther to the east, the more those who seek to preserve the study of the Russian language in a certain amount. However, even in the South and East, among those who now support the preservation of the study of the Russian language, the vast majority are in favor of a volume not exceeding the volume of studying other foreign languages..
Among the respondents who chose Russian for the interview, 71% want to keep the study of the Russian language in schools, but most of them also talk about the volume, no more than the study of other foreign languages. At the same time, in the survey, 89% of respondents chose Ukrainian for the interview, and only 11% - Russian.
Also, supporters of the exclusion of the study of the Russian language from schools are the younger participants in the survey..
Sociologists also tried to find out how ready the respondents are for territorial concessions, depending on their views on the study of the Russian language in schools.. Although those who support the preservation of the study of the Russian language in schools are more inclined to make concessions, even among them the absolute majority oppose any territorial concessions..
