history of the holiday.
According to the Gospel, Mary and Joseph came with the newborn Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem. In those days, the law of Moses was in force, according to which parents had to bring their firstborn to the temple for dedication to God on the 40th day after their birth. Also, at the same time, a sacrifice should be made as a token of gratitude to God.. Joseph and Mary entered the temple of Jerusalem, brought the baby Jesus, and took two doves as a sacrifice.
They met Simeon the God-Receiver, who was one of the 72 interpreters-translators whom the king instructed to translate the Holy Scripture from Hebrew into Greek. When Saint Simeon was translating the book of the prophet Isaiah and read " The angel of the Lord stopped Simeon and said that he would not die until he was convinced of the truth of Isaiah's prophecy.
Simeon waited for the fulfillment of a promise for about 300 years. The Holy Spirit told him to go to the temple, where Joseph and Mary came.
Simeon took the child in his arms and said, “Now you release Your servant, Lord, according to Your word, in peace, for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to enlighten the Gentiles and the glory of Your people Israel”.
