January 22 occupies one of the most important places in the Ukrainian political calendar. In 1918, the Universal of the Central Rada proclaimed the independence of the UNR.. The text of the Act of Zluka stated: “From now on, the parts of a united Ukraine that have been torn from one another for centuries merge together - the Western Ukrainian People's Republic (Galicia, Bukovina and Hungarian Ukraine) and the Naddniprian Greater Ukraine. The eternal dreams that the best sons of Ukraine lived and died for came true. From now on there is a single independent Ukrainian People's Republic"
At the same time, then the unification happened purely symbolically.. A few weeks later, the Bolsheviks captured Kyiv, the lands of Eastern Galicia were under the rule of Poland, and Transcarpathia - Czechoslovakia.
The first celebration of the Day of Unification took place in 1939 in Carpathian Ukraine (the city of Khust) - at that time the autonomous republic of Czechoslovakia. Then, under the blue-yellow flags, a 30,000-strong demonstration of the population took place, which gathered in the capital of Carpathian Ukraine from all over the region to recall the events of 20 years ago.
In 1990, Ukrainians organized a " Millions of Ukrainians, who were then still residents of the USSR, joined hands from Kyiv to Lvov, celebrating the Day of Unity, demonstrating the desire for freedom and national unity.
The Day of Unification takes on special significance now that Ukraine is living under the conditions of a full-scale Russian invasion. The aggressor country seeks to deprive Ukrainians of independence, occupy our lands and destroy infrastructure and habitual way of life. But the Ukrainians showed their unity, standing up for the defense of their land and freedom, and courageously repulse the occupiers.
