It has already been reported more than once that for any of its territorial successes, Russia pays with huge losses, throwing a huge number of soldiers into attacks. The Israeli army faced a similar situation in the 50s and 60s, which in some situations could not use heavy weapons. About how the Israelis solved this problem, the officer of the Israel Defense Forces, military expert Yigal Levin told Telegram.

In those years, according to him, the army of the young Jewish state had a shortage of everything, especially tanks and artillery.. At the same time, often small Israeli infantry units could find themselves in the face of Syrian, Jordanian or Egyptian legions, which were many times superior in terms of manpower and used live wave tactics directly on Israeli positions..

“In order to fight such “meat waves”, the engineers of the Laskov group (headed by military engineer David Laskov) invented a “watermelon” bomb. It was created specifically for the defense of the stronghold on Har HaTzofim (Mount Scopus) in Jerusalem, since the ceasefire agreement forbade the possession of heavy weapons there.. This was used by the Jordanians, trying to take the Israeli oporniks simply by quantity, - said Yigal Levin. “Essentially, the watermelon bomb was a short-range high-explosive fragmentation missile with an air blast.”.

For this bomb, the shot of the 82-mm Super Bazooka RPG was taken as the basis, a high-explosive charge with a cast-iron body was made around it, which scattered into striking elements. They launched this “watermelon” at an angle from a set position at a distance of 140 meters - after that, the retarder worked, which exploded the “watermelon” at a height of about 10 meters above the head of the advancing enemy.

“Sometimes it was enough to break three or four of these“ watermelons ”to discourage the enemy’s infantry from further assault.. This simple and inexpensive weapon remained in service with the Israel Defense Forces for quite some time..

There is evidence of their use in the 70s and even 80s, and, it seems to me, such weapons could be very effective for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to stop the “meat waves” of hordes of convicts and chmobiks at the front, ”says Yigal Levin.

To establish such production, in his opinion, is very simple, and the effect of this is serious - the use of such a bomb will give each platoon strong point at the front its own personal pocket artillery.
