Russia failed to install and properly apply appropriate dynamic armor (ERA) on its tanks, which explains their losses during the Russian armed attack on Ukraine, UK Department of Defense analysts say.
“When used correctly, ERA reduces the effectiveness of entry rounds before they hit the tank.. This suggests that Russian forces have not corrected the culture of poor use of armor dating back to the First Chechen War in 1994..
It is also likely that many Russian tank crews lack the ability to maintain ERA, leading either to poor fit of explosive elements or to its complete failure..
“These deficiencies likely contribute to the common turret ejections well documented in eyewitness video from Ukraine.. During the war, Russian commanders were unable to ensure high-level combat discipline.. The cumulative effect of these failures is, in all likelihood, a significant factor in the low effectiveness of Russian forces..
