English in Ukraine may receive a special status

The Ministry of Culture and Information Policy has prepared a draft law on the establishment of a special status of the English language in Ukraine as the language of international communication. This was reported by the press service of the department.

According to the First Deputy Minister of Culture and Information Policy Rostislav Karandeev, the adoption of the law will expand the use of the English language and will contribute to the investment and tourist attractiveness of Ukraine.

“Every Ukrainian who will study English will be much more aware of European life. This will also help to form the subjectivity of Ukraine in the world globalization processes,” Karandeev said..

The bill provides:.

establishment of a special status of the English language in Ukraine as an international communication;

significant expansion of the scope of the English language in Ukraine;

English will be mandatory in certain public areas of public life where there are international communications.

To work on the future law, the ministry plans to create an interdepartmental working group. It should include people's deputies of Ukraine, representatives of state bodies and the public. After the proposals of the working group, the draft law is planned to be discussed with the public, and then submitted for approval by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Karandeev stressed that Ukraine in the world ranking takes only 40th position out of 112 countries in terms of the level of English language proficiency of citizens..

Recall, according to the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmihal, English can acquire the status of a language of business communication in Ukraine.
