After the invasion of the Russian Federation, Ukrainians dramatically changed their attitude towards the Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. More than 64% of respondents perceive Stalin negatively, and only 5% positively, according to the results of a sociological study by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, conducted July 6-20.
Before the Revolution of Dignity, a minority of the population (23% of respondents) had a positive attitude towards Stalin. Until 2021, the situation did not change significantly, although the general trend was rather in the direction of reducing the number of those who have a positive attitude towards Stalin.
The attitude towards the Soviet leader is worst in the West and in the Center. In the South, no more than half - 55% of respondents have a negative attitude (positively - only 6%). In the East, a negative attitude is 45% (another 35% have an indifferent attitude, and a positive attitude is 12%).
Among Russian-speaking Ukrainians, the attitude towards Stalin is better, but among all Ukrainians it is precisely the negative attitude that prevails (even among Russian-speaking Russians, 50% have a negative attitude and only 21% have a positive attitude).
Among all ages, the majority of Ukrainians have a negative attitude towards the Soviet leader.
The study was conducted from 6 to 20 July using telephone interviews. 2000 respondents were surveyed. The survey was conducted with adult (aged 18 years and older) citizens of Ukraine who at the time of the survey were residing on the territory of Ukraine (within the limits controlled by the Ukrainian authorities until February 24, 2022).
Formally, under normal circumstances, the statistical error of such a sample (with a probability of 0.
95 and taking into account the design effect of 1.1) did not exceed 2.4% for indicators close to 50%, 2.1% for indicators close to 25%,. In war conditions, a certain systematic deviation is added to the formal error. According to KIIS, the results of the survey remain highly representative.
