history of the holiday.

Panteleimon lived in Nicomedia on the coast of the Sea of \u200b\u200bMarmara in Asia Minor. The mother of the saint was a Christian, and his father was a pagan. After Panteleimon grew up, he wanted to convert to Christianity. The saint began to help the needy, visit prisons and hospitals, and in his house he hid Christians who were sent into exile.

After the death of his mother, his father sent the boy to a pagan school, and then to a medical school, where he studied medicine with a famous doctor named Euphrosynus.. Panteleimon stood out among his peers, he had a sharp mind, eloquence and a quiet, complaisant disposition..

Already an adult, Panteleimon persuaded his father to be baptized, but he refused. At the same time, the saint was able to restore his sight, then Panteleimon's father believed and followed his son.

After the miracle of healing, Panteleimon gained the greatest fame among people. They began to talk about him as a merciful and healing doctor.. But the saint's abilities aroused envy and anger among other doctors, so they informed Tsar Maximilian that Panteleimon had converted to Christianity..

The king turned to the saint and suggested that he refute the words of other doctors and make a sacrifice to the gods. Panteleimon refused and offered to arrange a test to find out who - the pagan priests or he - could heal the terminally ill. It was meant to indicate whose faith is true.

The priests could not cure the patient, and Panteleimon easily coped with this. After that, many believed in Christ, and Maximilian became angry and ordered the healed to be executed.. He found Panteleimon for torment.

It is believed that the saint was hung on a tree by his legs, his body was cut with hooks, burned with candles and stretched on a wheel.. Panteleimon was also handed over to be torn to pieces by wild animals, thrown into the depths of the sea with a stone around his neck, but as a result of all the tortures, the saint remained alive..

After that, Maximilian ordered the martyr's head to be cut off.. After this was done, milk came out of the wound, not blood.. After the execution, the martyrs threw the body into the fire, but it remained unharmed.. After he was buried by Christians. A thousand years later, the head of Panteleimon became a shrine of the Athos St. Panteleimon Monastery.
