All the arrested defendants of the case are Chechens. Zaur Dadaev, Beslan Shavanov, who are considered to be the perpetrators of the murder, as well as Ruslan Mukhudinov, whom the investigation calls organizer and customer, used to serve in the Chechen battalion "North".

According to relatives of Nemtsov, Dadaev, who was awarded the Order of Courage in 2010, was personally acquainted with the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov and other leaders of the republic.

On June 20, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation announced that an investigation into the five persons involved in the murder of the politician was completed.
