Border police of Romania in the evening of May 1 at the international checkpoint "Solotvino - Sighetu Marmatiei" detained the spouses of Michael and Elena Yovdy from the Tyachiv district of the Transcarpathian region, said the head of Transcarpathian regional state administration Gennady Moskal.
During the inspection of the Maserati car, on which the spouses crossed the Ukrainian-Romanian border, 400 thousand dollars of undeclared cash were found under the spare wheel. The money was not properly registered either at the exit from Ukraine or at the entrance to Romania.
At the same time, Mikhail Yovdi is the son of the former chairman of the Tyachiv district state administration, the head of the United Center party Vasily Yovdiya. According to Gennady Moskal, the car that carried cash was purchased at the very time when Vasily Yovdi was in charge of the district.
"Finally, the question is - who will believe that our customs officers did not notice 400 thousand dollars under the spare wheel?
I personally do not believe, therefore I instructed the prosecutor's office and the SBU to conduct a thorough check of this fact and bring them to justice. Generally, the assessment of professional blindness of customs officers should give guidance to the Customs Service. Let's look at his reaction, "- concluded Moskal.
As it was reported earlier, in January of this year the State Border Service employees together with the SBU and customs officials warned in the Sumy region an attempt to export to Russia the radio navigation device used in the onboard systems of military aircraft.
