On Monday, May 1, Ukraine celebrates Labor Day or International Solidarity Day of Workers. The holiday is celebrated in 142 countries and territories of the world.
In some countries, May Day is noted at a different time - they include, for example, the United States and Japan. More than 80 countries (including India) do not have Labor Day.
On May 1, 1886, American workers organized a strike demanding an 8-hour working day. The strike and the accompanying demonstration ended in a bloody clash with the police.
In July 1889, the Paris Congress of the Second International, in memory of the performance of the workers of Chicago, decided to hold May 1 annual demonstrations.
For the first time the day of international workers' solidarity was marked in 1890 in Austria-Hungary, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Italy, the USA, Norway, France, Sweden and some other countries. For a long time, May Day was a symbol of revolution, an irreconcilable class struggle.
In the USSR, May Day for many years was the main state holiday. On May 1, 1990, the leadership of the Soviet Union and the CPSU rose for the last time to the rostrum of the Mausoleum for the last official May Day demonstration. In 1992, the International Day of Workers' Solidarity was renamed the Spring and Labor Day.
