A team of astronomers using the Subaru telescope discovered a super-Earth that revolves around a star located close to the Sun. According to Phys. org, the planet, dubbed Ross 508 b, is about four times the size of Earth..

Super-Earths are called planets that are larger than Earth, but not up to the size of Neptune.. Newly discovered celestial body revolves around a star, which is located at a distance of 36.6 light years from the Sun.

Astronomers' observations have shown that the planet revolves around the star in about 10.75 Earth days.. It is located at a distance of 0.053 astronomical units (the average distance from the Earth to the Sun) from the mother star. This means that Ross 508 b is on the inner edge of its parent star's habitable zone..

Scientists believe that the planet could have formed behind the snow line of the star, but then migrated closer to it.

The radius of the star Ross 508 is about a quarter of the radius of the Sun, and its mass is about 0.18 of the mass of our star..

Earlier, astronomers using the Very Large Telescope discovered another alleged planet that orbits Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the solar system.. If the discovery is confirmed, the object will become the third planet in this system..
