Scientists from the University of Victoria have recorded a record high “killer wave” that originated on the coast of Uklulet on Vancouver Island. According to New Atlas, the wave height was 17.6 meters, it appeared in November 2020.

Killer waves are waves that appear suddenly and are much higher than other waves in the current.. They pose a danger to ships and infrastructure that happen to be nearby.. Now scientists have recorded a record-breaking killer wave as high as a four-story building.

It is noted that the waves are much higher, they are even ridden by surfers who are looking for thrills.. But killer waves are dangerous because of their unpredictability and are determined by the fact that they are almost twice as high as the waves around. Unlike tsunamis, which tend to cause seismic events, killer waves are caused by strong currents, winds, or storms, which can cause individual waves to merge into one huge structure..

The first such case was reported in 1995 off the coast of Norway.. Then the height of the killer wave was 25.6 meters, and the surrounding waves - 12 meters.

The Uklulet wave was much lower than this, but since the waves around it were only six meters in size, it was recorded as a record killer wave..

According to Johannes Gemmrich of the University of Victoria, such events happen once every 1,300 years.. Scientists note that it is very difficult to fix and measure “rogue waves”. Their unpredictability makes them a danger to maritime infrastructure..
