MOLA Headland Infrastructure archaeologists have discovered a previously unknown Roman city near a small village in South Northamptonshire, Central England.. According to Naked science, the presence of an archaeological site in the area was known as early as the 17th century, but the scale and quality of the finds exceeded all expectations..

The site known as Blackgrounds has been used as pasture for centuries, so the land was not plowed here.. As a rule, pastures not only prevent the destruction of archaeological sites, but also, thanks to the waste products of livestock and specific soil, seal what is under it..

The use of this place began in the Iron Age. Archaeologists managed to find a village of more than 30 round houses, as well as a road from that period.. Later, a city with stone buildings and new roads appeared on this place..

Researchers believe that the locals continued to live in this place during the Roman period and adapted to the new way of life.. The "

A road 10 meters wide passed through the settlement. Its width indicates that the city was on a busy trade route, with carts coming and going from different directions to unload goods.. It is likely that the wealth of the settlement was based on trade, not only along the Roman road. Nearby flows the River Charwell, at that moment navigable. Archaeologists managed to find 300 Roman coins, which, probably, were once lost..

According to scientists, the settlement was divided into different areas, the foundations of both residential buildings and those used by artisans were found.. The wealth of the city rested not only on trade: scientists also found workshops, furnaces, as well as evidence that the area was used for activities related to roasting.. It is possible that foundries were located here, in which metal was processed, or pottery kilns..

In addition, archaeologists managed to find glass vessels, finely crafted and well-painted ceramics, jewelry. Traces of galena were also found - a substance that was crushed, mixed with oil and paints, and then used as cosmetics.. Scientists also found half of a set of shackles, indicating either criminal activity or slave labor..

Archaeologists believe that at least hundreds of people lived in the city.. Apparently, the place was inhabited all the time of Roman rule: some traces indicate that around the middle of the first century, literally after the arrival of the first legions in Britain, Roman-type defensive structures appeared in a village with round houses. But there is no evidence of fighting in this territory. Most likely, the legionnaires passed the neighborhood quickly, without encountering resistance..

Why residents left the city is unknown. Researchers have found no signs of destruction or impoverishment, but there are no artifacts of the end of Roman rule.
