Samsung Electronics leads the sales of smartphones with OLED-displays in the largest markets. The situation may change with the release of the iPhone X. This was reported in the research company Strategy Analytics.
According to experts for the second quarter of 2017, Samsung holds the first place in terms of sales of smartphones using OLED screens in China, the US, India, Japan and South Korea. The shares of the South Korean giant in these countries are not called by the researchers.
The report says that OLED panels are becoming a distinctive feature for the global smartphone market with a strong demand. More and more flagship devices are beginning to receive such displays, as manufacturers are looking for innovative solutions in design and internal performance, and also strive to optimize energy consumption.
Earlier in September 2017, Apple introduced the first in its range of phones with OLED-display. Strategy Analytics is confident that iPhone X will change the state of affairs in the market of OLED-tubes in the fourth quarter.
In the analytical company Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), specializing in research of the display industry, it is predicted that smartphones equipped with OLED-screens will surpass the delivery of devices with LCD panels in 2019.
It is expected that in the period from 2016 to 2021 the world production of OLED panels will increase from 7.5 million square meters to 40.4 million, taking into account that the average growth rate for the industry will be 52%.
In 2016, the largest manufacturers of OLED panels Samsung Display and LG Display provided 92% of the global output of OLED products. In addition, the top three leaders last year included a representative of the PRC BOE Technology. Experts believe that the top-3 rating will not change until 2018.
The rapid spread of OLED-displays is predicted also by analysts of the Taiwan-based research company TrendForce.
According to their estimates, this type of products will approach the 50% share in the smartphone market in 2020. It is also noted that by the end of 2016 AMOLED panels accounted for only 23.8% of the total volume of smartphone displays.
Experts note that Apple's intention to use OLED-displays in the new iPhone significantly spurred the introduction of this type of screen by other vendors. Seeing the high demand, display manufacturers, especially in China, are accelerating the production lines for OLED panels.
