The semiconductor industry showed the largest growth in three years, as evidenced by the data of analysts IHS Markit.
They estimated that in April-June 2017 global chip sales reached 101.4 billion dollars against 95.6 billion dollars three months earlier. Thus, the market volume grew by 6.1%, which was the highest since the second quarter of 2014.
The memory chip segment climbed 10.7% on a quarterly basis and reached a record $ 30.2 billion in the second quarter of 2017, driven by the 14% and 12.3% sales of DRAM and NOR flash chips, respectively.
"The next quarter in the market of DRAM-memory was a record in terms of revenue due to increased prices and supplies," commented the research analyst at the markets of RAM and storage solutions IHS Markit Mike Howard (Mike Howard). - The alarming situation with the availability of products in the third and fourth quarters put pressure on the industry. This led to the replenishment of stocks by many buyers of DRAM-memory, which further presses on the already compressed market. Everything goes to the fact that in 2017 sales of DRAM-memory will beat the record and exceed the $ 60 billion mark ".
According to analyst IHS Markit Clifford Leimbach (Clifford Leimbach), the deterioration in the balance of supply and demand in the segment of NOR flash memory increased the cost of chips and sales in general. In recent years, the demand for these products has been steadily declining, so some manufacturers are reducing the release of such memory or are leaving the market altogether, thereby exacerbating the situation and raising prices for NOR flash.
According to experts, Intel remains the largest semiconductor company, but South Korea's Samsung Electronics.
Vendors in the second quarter were 14.3% and 14.2% for the benefit of Intel.
The three leaders were SK Hynix with a 5.8 percent result. Next came Micron Technology (5.3%) and Broadcom (4.1%). The top 5 accounted for almost 44% of revenues in the semiconductor industry.
The highest growth rates in the top twenty largest manufacturers of chips in April-June 2017 showed AMD and Nvidia, semiconductor revenue to increase by 24.7% and 14.6% respectively.
