Archaeologists from the Institute of National Heritage of Tunisia and the University of Sassari in Italy discovered the ancient Roman city of Neapolis ("New City"), founded in the fifth century BC and disappeared as a result of the tsunami about 1700 years ago. The search for the ancient city began in 2010, but researchers discovered the ruins more recently.

The ruins of the city extend to 20 hectares and confirm the hypothesis that Neapolis was indeed destroyed by a tsunami caused by an earthquake in 365 AD.

This natural disaster was recorded historian Ammien Marcellin, and experts believe that it caused significant damage in Alexandria in Egypt and on the Greek island of Crete. Historians believe that the earthquake consisted of two tremors, with the greatest value reaching 8 points.

The find includes whole streets, monuments and about a hundred tanks intended for storage of garum - fermented fish sauce. The latter was a very popular condiment in Ancient Rome and Greece and, probably, its production played an important role for the economy of Neapolis.

"This is a major discovery proving that Neapolis was the largest center for the production of garum and salted fish in Ancient Rome," says Munir Fantar, head of the archaeological expedition. This was written "Today".
