By 2020, the display industry will face an oversupply of OLED-screens for smartphones, and in conditions of overproduction, only manufacturers using innovative technologies will be able to survive on the market, according to LG Display.

"By 2020, the supply of OLED-panels for smartphones will outstrip demand for them, which will provoke the beginning of an uncompromising struggle among manufacturers. However, companies that own innovative technologies will survive this "drop-out game," said LG Display technical director Kang In-byeong at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) in South Korea.

According to LG Display, by 2020 the total shipments of smart OLED displays will reach 25.2 million square meters. m, which will exceed the demand for 7.3 million square meters.

Leaders of the OLED industry today are South Korean companies Samsung and LG, but Chinese vendors are trying to squeeze all competitors.

A huge investment from the PRC in the expansion of capacity can lead to oversaturation of the market, said in an interview with The Korea Herald top manager LG Display.

However, the efforts undertaken by China do not threaten the adherents of innovative technologies, to which Kang In-Biong relates his company. LG Display predicts that in 2020 its share in the total volume of produced OLED-panels of a small size will increase to 40%, although in 2016 the indicator was only at the level of 5%.
