Changes in the structure of consumer demand led to the fact that in 2017, the world market of screens for mobile phones for the first time will outperform the other leading segment of the display industry - TV panels, according to Yonhap with reference to analysts IHS Markit.

TV screens have traditionally been the largest category of the display market, but in the last six years, from 2010 to 2016, sales on these products have been reduced by an average of 8%, according to the statistics of the research company. In the panel segment for mobile phones, on the contrary, there was a pronounced growth - in the period under review, the revenue in it increased by an average of 17%, which allowed to close the gap with the leading category.

According to IHS Markit, in the current year, sales of displays for "mobile phones" will bring 46.56 billion US dollars, while the market for TV panels, including OLED screens, is expected to reach $ 41.25 billion.

For comparison, in 2010, the revenue in the TV-panel market reached $ 55.38 billion, and four times higher than in the screen segment for mobile phones, where sales were measured at $ 12.9 billion.

The rise in the display market for mobile phones is directly related to the proliferation of smartphones, as well as the latest achievements of manufacturers in the field of creating panels with ultra-high resolution, analysts believe. It is also noted that from the companies' side, the leaders of the smartphone industry Samsung and Apple.

In the meantime, Strategy Analytics experts predict that the mobile display market will continue to grow rapidly. It is expected that their supplies in 2017 will reach 3.24 billion units, and in five years will rise to 4.62 billion units, which will contribute to the emergence of increasingly advanced and high-end displays such as flexible OLED. Thus, mobile displays are likely to continue to outpace the TV category.

The segment of flexible screens is one of the most dynamically developing categories of the display market. It is expected that the volume of revenue in this market will increase from $ 3.13 billion in 2016 to 20 billion in 2020.

The most profitable position in this direction is Samsung Display, which dominates the segment of OLED-screens for mobile phones. South Korean vendor produces more than 90% of this product and, according to experts, in the foreseeable future Samsung Display will retain its leading position.
