Apple plans to develop a system of self-managed shuttles that will transport employees from one building to another. This is written by The New York Times, explaining the company's attempts to develop software for unmanned vehicles.
It is reported that the shuttle system will be used mainly to move between different Apple offices, but it is possible that they will also run inside Apple Park - the building is very large, and in order to completely bypass it, it is necessary to spend about half an hour. Earlier there were rumors that a new campus will be laid underground line, but the solution with shuttles is clearly easier to implement and more budgetary.
Among the sources of the publication were five Apple employees who also talked about how the company came to its shuttle system.
According to them, for several years, Apple hired hundreds of employees in the field of unmanned vehicles, which developed everything from scratch - from the LIDAR sensor to a completely new steering wheel in the form of a "globe" instead of the traditional "steering wheel". Until mid-2016, the corporation really wanted to release its own self-managed car, but when the project was headed by Bob Mansfield, the focus shifted to software, and many employees were fired.
Now, Apple is actively testing its unmanned control system on several Lexus RX450h cars. Most likely, the company will take as a basis one of the existing buses, equip it with a self-management system, and then make a shuttle from it.
