ES & S, which supplies voting machines to dozens of states, has leaked 1.8 million US voters. The incident was reported by security researcher Chris Vickery of UpGuard, who discovered a vulnerable database in the cloud AWS storehouse. Because of the wrong configuration, anyone could easily upload personal information to almost 2 million Chicago residents.
The database contains names, addresses, dates of birth, and in part the social security numbers of Chicago voters. Some records also include driver's license numbers and identification numbers issued by the state authorities.
"The backup copies of files stored on the AWS server do not contain any information regarding the voting results and are in no way related to the voting and tabulation systems used in Chicago," said ES & S.
As it turned out, access to the service used by the manufacturer AWS S3 was open to everyone, but somehow the data of the Chicagoans. The researchers tried to find the data of voters from other cities, but without success - it seems that the incident affected only the database of residents of Chicago.
