Disabling phone notifications has a positive effect on mental health, according to a study conducted by scientists at the American University of Carnegie Mellon in cooperation with the Spanish telecommunications company Telefonica. The results of the research reported Quartz.
For the test, 30 people needed to switch off all notifications on the phone for a week, but potential subjects refused to part with mobile reminders for such a period, so the experiment had to be reduced to a day.
After the end of the experiment, which started in 2015, about two-thirds of its participants noted that disabling notifications helped them to be less distracted and made the day more productive.
At the same time, other participants felt anxious, without receiving messages from colleagues and friends.
Two years later, scientists found that 17 of the 30 people who participated in the study began to regularly use on their devices a "do not disturb".
The authors of the study agree that the sample of 30 people is not enough for rigorous conclusions, but note that disabling telephone notifications can really positively influence the human psyche.
