The use of smartphones has a serious impact on the mental health of adolescents and their behavior in general. To such a conclusion came the professor of psychology of the University of California in San Diego, and concurrently - the writer Jean Twenge. A few days ago, the professor published an article in which he gave statistical data confirming this statement.

In his work Jean Twenge notes that in the state of mind of most teenagers there is a crisis. And this fact is associated with the advent of smartphones on the market, it is in them, according to Gene Twenge, lies the root of evil.

The emergence of smartphones has radically changed every aspect of the life of adolescents: from the nature of social interactions to mental health [. ] Rates of teenage depression have risen sharply since 2011.

Tweng believes that teenagers today spend less and less time meeting and chatting with friends, and most often feel lonely. According to a poll in 2017, which involved 5,000 American teens, three out of four are owners of the iPhone.

Adolescents who spend three or more hours a day on electronic devices, 35% more often think about suicide.

Symptoms of depression among adolescent boys increased by 21% over the period from 2012 to 2015, while that for girls increased by 50% - more than double. The increase in the number of suicides is more pronounced among teenage girls. Although this figure has increased significantly in relation to the two sexes.

The article mentions that smartphones are not the only culprit for the current situation, but still one of the main.

The style of upbringing continues to change, just as the school curriculum and culture change - and all this matters.

But the growth in the number of smartphones and social media has caused a real earthquake, which we have not noticed for a long time. There is convincing evidence that the devices that we ourselves put into the hands of the younger generation have a profound impact on their lives and make them unhappy.

As Twange herself admits, she does not have simple solutions for this situation, because it is foolish to expect from teenagers that they will suddenly stop using smartphones so often or stay long in social networks.
