Intel has disbanded a unit that has been working on wearable electronics, such as fitness trackers that monitor health and physical activity, CNBC reported citing informed sources.

Over the past few years, Intel has been paying less attention to its own line of wearable devices, and in its financial reports this direction has not been featured since 2014.

In November 2016th edition of TechCrunch reported that the company decided to move away from this business after the purchase of the manufacturer of the fitness clock Basis did not bring the expected results. Intel then denied the information.

However, a source aware of the situation told CNBC that in November the chipmaker disbanded about 80% of the Basis team, although many of the employees were given the opportunity to move to other units of Intel.

Also, the insider claims that about two weeks ago, Intel completely eliminated the group.

Another interlocutor of the agency said that the New Technologies Group, which focuses on advanced business areas, has now focused on developments in the field of augmented reality (AR, augmented reality).

Intel has not yet commented on the information.

The Intel site, in the section on worn-out technologies, still advertises the Curie chipset for IoT devices, including for portable electronics, as well as a smart watch developed in conjunction with Tag Heuer.
