Experts in the field of computer security suspect hackers from Russia in the attack on the grid of Ireland and the United Kingdom. This writes on Saturday, July 15, the British newspaper The Times.

The publication reports that the hackers were allegedly linked to the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (better known as the Main Intelligence Agency, GRU) and worked for the Russian government. They sent letters with malicious programs to employees and leading engineers of the Irish state power company Electricity Supply Board in June, but there were no violations in the operation of power grids.

Thus, letters, in particular, contained complaints about shortcomings in work or applications for employment with a resume file. The latter, according to The Times sources, is evidence of an acquaintance of intruders with the technological systems used by the Electricity Supply Board.

The National Center for Cybersecurity of Ireland reported that it is investigating the incident.

The newspaper also writes about attempts by hackers to enter the computer network of the UK power system, including through Northern Ireland. The details are not given.

The Times notes that Ireland serves as an important base for technology companies such as Facebook and Apple. The publication also recalled the hacked computer networks of several US power plants. Then it was noted that Russia is the main suspect, but cybersecurity experts said that there was no data for such an assertion.
