Deputies of the European Parliament in the course of the plenary session discussed the issue of maintainability of smartphones sold in the territory of the EU member states. According to the authorities, the insufficient wear resistance of modern communication means forces consumers to purchase new gadgets instead of getting damaged instead of seeking repair. This, in turn, causes damage to the environment and leads to the consumerization of society.
Consumers could save a significant part of their income if smartphone manufacturers did not interfere with their repair. This idea was voiced by one of the deputies of the legislative body of the European Union. In addition, MPs believe, the promotion of repair as an alternative to the purchase of new devices will create additional jobs, which will subsequently lead to competitive prices for the provision of similar services.
Deputies have already developed a draft list of requirements for personal communication devices delivered to the markets of the European Union. These include:
the establishment of a uniform standard for the resistance of electronics to damage, the duty of manufacturers to provide repair of the technology during the claimed service life, the prohibition of the use of a glue base that prevents the removal of the battery and display module.
If the project passes approval, and such a chance is definitely there, the producers will have nothing else to do but obey and more thoroughly approach the issue of the internal layout of the products. "We must be sure that the components are no longer glued to the body of the device to be able to change them as they fail, and not throw the whole device out," concluded Pascal Duran, a member of the House of Parliament.
