The European Space Agency (ESA), at the Paris-based international air show Paris Airshow, which takes place in the Paris-Le Bourget suburbs from June 19 to 25, presented the Satellite for 5G initiative.
It is about the development and demonstration of technologies that will allow to organize Internet access via 5G through the satellite infrastructure. It is noted that, in comparison with terrestrial base stations, this approach will provide an important advantage - access to the network will be available anywhere in the world.
Sixteen companies of the satellite industry will take part in the project. Testing solutions for the project Satellite for 5G will be held in 2018-2020.
The results obtained can form the basis of the future global network of satellite 5G communications.
5G networks will not only allow you to multiply the data transfer speed in comparison with the current LTE-services, but also will enable to reduce delays. In addition, the number of connected devices will increase significantly per unit area. All this is important in the light of the rapid development of the Internet of things and the introduction of autopilot systems.
