The NetMarketShare service, which tracks the activity of more than 160 million unique users who scan over 40,000 sites worldwide, has published fresh statistics on the popularity of browsers. Google Chrome not only retained leadership, but also increased its share to a new record value.

According to NetMarketShare data for May 2017, Google Chrome is installed on 59% of computers used to access the Internet, which is 0.36 percentage points more compared to the figure of a month ago. Meanwhile, StatCounter reports that Chrome's share reached 63.36%.

About a year ago Chrome for the first time outstripped Internet Explorer in popularity among web browsers for personal computers globally. In May 2017, the market share of Internet Explorer was 17.55%, which was the lowest value for many years.

Internet Explorer began to lose ground after that in early 2016 Microsoft stopped supporting all versions of Internet Explorer, except the last - the eleventh. Since that time, security updates and technical support are not provided for Internet Explorer 10 and older versions of Microsoft's web browser.

Now the American corporation promotes its other browser - Edge. However, its share in April 2017 reached only 5.63%, for the month having increased by 0.01 percentage points. Such a weak increase was the second consecutive.

The top three most popular browsers for desktops and laptops globally are still Firefox, whose share for the month increased from 11.8% to 11.98%. The share of Safari was 3.56% against 3.44% in April 2017.

According to the StatCounter service, which accounts for more than 15 billion web page views on 3 million sites, in April 2017, 14.2% of computer owners used Firefox. The shares of Internet Explorer and Safari were 9.2% and 5.25% respectively.
