In India, cybercriminals use Rufus malware to attack ATMs running Windows XP. According to the publication of The Dailymail, ATMs were attacked in the settlements of West Bengal, Gujarat, Odishi and Bihar.

Attacks were carried out at night. With the help of malware, intruders in just a few minutes devastated the ATM. To infect the device, a USB drive containing a malicious file. Having infected the device, the malicious device initiated a system reboot, breaking the connection with the servers of ATM operators.

Then the malicious program generated the code and sent it to the criminals, who converted it into a password.

Every time when entering a password, the ATM gave out cash that the criminals took away and left without attracting attention.

According to law enforcers, such attacks are possible because of insufficient security of ATMs. Currently, banks in India are conducting appropriate device checks. At the same time, ATM manufacturers deny the existence of vulnerabilities in their devices. Investigation of incidents continues.

Earlier, as a result of the operation, under the direction of Europol, the activities of the international network engaged in fraud with credit cards.
