Despite desperate attempts by Google to solve the problem of fragmentation of the Android OS, every year the problem only worsens. The head of Apple, Tim Cook, drew attention to this fact during the presentation of WWDC 2017 in San Jose.
Despite the increased range of its devices, Apple continues to strictly monitor the upgrade process. IOS Tim Cook called "the best and most advanced mobile platform in the world". The level of user satisfaction iOS 10, according to him, is a record 96%.
"86% of our customers use the capabilities of the operating system iOS 10. This is just an incredible result on the background of other platforms that suffer from terrible fragmentation, "said Cook. - In the case of iOS, developers can always aim at the latest technologies of our platform ".
For comparison, Cook led the situation with the operating system Android 7, which came out even before iOS 10. Now it is not installed even on 10% compatible. According to Cook, most devices will never get Android 8.
Judging by Tim Cook's schedule, at the moment only 7% of devices work on the current version of Android 7, and all the rest - on older versions of 80% of gadgets run under even older versions of the OS.
To be fair, it's worth noting that about 11% of "apple" devices continue to run on iOS 9, and 3% of users - on earlier versions of iOS. On the one hand, this is due to the end of the support period for some iPhones and iPads, and on the other hand, with the unwillingness of a number of owners to upgrade to new versions of the system.
Whatever it was, one can not but agree that a strong fragmentation of the ecosystem does not bear anything good and can potentially harm all market participants because of the total elimination of critical security threats.
