Apple's new campus: children do not belong here

Not so long ago, Wired journalists were lucky enough to get on an excursion and see how the new Apple campus looks from within. As befits a company with such a reputation and such a budget, inside the new building Apple strikes no less than outside. Lots of glass, chrome, wood and high technology. It would seem that everything is perfect, if not for one detail that outraged some journalists. There is no kindergarten here. "It's some kind of mistake," some say.. "This is more of a feature," Apple.

According to Cassie Murdoch from the portal Mashable, this is a direct message for those who are ready to put a dedicated obsession with their work and their family on two opposite scales. And this message Apple makes it clear - this is a bad idea.

Inside the campus, with an area of ??more than 607,000 square meters, there is everything: a huge fitness club, its own beauty and health center, a huge parking lot, a giant green park where employees can relax during a break from their affairs. In general, this place has all the necessary set for those who decided to choose for themselves the way to literally live at work. With one reservation. If only these people have no children or at least there is someone to whom they can be left at home.

Of course, someone will say that children are flowers of life and everything is in the same spirit. But we need to face the truth and say that children can create problems. And these problems clearly do not fit into the concept of a vision of the world that appears in the eyes of Apple. In all fairness, it's worth saying that not only does Apple "sin". Almost all Silicon Valley companies have the same views, with only a few exceptions.

Handsome, running and smashing everything around the crockery do not fit into the pristine pure aesthetics of this temple of glass, chrome, wood and technology. They are unpredictable, they often get sick, they require increased attention. Of course, no one should stay in the office 24 hours a day, but many who work in companies such as Apple can not otherwise simply. They are just so used to it. Consciously or not, this has become their lifestyle.

The constant work of parents ultimately affects everyone in the family, says Kessi Murdoch, but most of all, in her opinion, goes to mothers. Perhaps you did not know this, but women in the Silicon Valley work much less than men. Therefore it is not surprising that none of the male circle in the leadership of Apple has taken into account the fact that caring for children for most families is very difficult and expensive.

Of course, having a kindergarten would not be an ideal solution to all problems. But having a childcare center close to the workplace would seriously simplify the role of working parents. In fact, statistics show that the benefits of companies that are able to provide such a possibility are visible at least in the fact that they are then able to retain high-quality specialists who do not go away to look for other places where this possibility is envisaged.

Of course, there are those who say that children's centers at the office are rather a rare exception, and not a constant practice among employers. And they will be right. This establishment definitely requires additional space, but, according to Kessey Murdoch, this is not a limiting factor for a company whose campus was designed and built on the basis of Apple's own personal requirements. The content of such an institution is also costly. "But we're talking about Apple! "- resents Murdoch, who believes that money for Apple is also not a problem.

According to the journalist, Apple could definitely include the construction of a children's center in the estimate if it wanted. She could build even a whole school inside the campus. And perhaps, even the launch pad for space rockets. But these things did not stand for her priority. And that says a lot, comments Murdoch, though pointing out that without the launch complex it really could be dispensed with.

For Apple, even the first item on this list was superfluous. It is not surprising, given the current statistics. The journalist here notes that people working in technology companies are mostly young, and many just have not had time to get a family. However, the entire campus is a kind of investment in the future of Apple, and its employees will not remain forever young. Over time, all grow up, and many eventually want to have children. And when these children appear, people begin to rack their brains and in a hurry to look for places where children can be left while the father and mother are moving the world forward into a bright future. In Apple such places, these people are most likely not to be found.

But they can be found on the campus of Google. She, in the opinion of Kessi Murdoch, takes better care of the problems of the family. The new sparkling central headquarters of Apple has not even opened yet, but in this regard it already looks like some relic from the past. On the other hand, this is exactly what you will get if you build it according to the dictates of Steve Jobs. He was clearly not known for his ability to strike a balance between family and work. Therefore it is quite obvious that his idea of ??the future did not include those who would at least occasionally see his family.

But here's the thing. Jobs is no more. Therefore, there is no need to support "antisocial" ideas. What for? Perhaps it will take time, but the culture of "working with the family" will sooner or later prevail, Murdoch believes..

The current leadership of Apple makes it clear that he is not particularly concerned with social aspects such as family.

Especially ironic, the journalist thinks, it looks against the background of the famous slogan of the company "Think differently". There is no need to think about the "different" here, because what Apple does is a real remnant of the past.

Understand correctly, each molecule of the new campus was developed with a special approach to life. They have developed their own door handles, each window has a special angle of inclination. They even designed fucking pizza boxes! They did not forget to build a children's center on the campus, they just do not need it there.
